Das wurde uns dann sp\u00e4testens beim Feiern des Bergfestes am Samstagabend bewusst. Auf Station ging es am n\u00e4chsten Tag direkt weiter. Wir fahren nun St\u00fcck f\u00fcr St\u00fcck in Richtung S\u00fcden und fahren aus dem High Salinity Bereich des \u00f6stlichen subtropischen Atlantiks raus in Richtung Innertropische Konvergenzzone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Der Tag begann fr\u00fch mit dem Deployment unseres Forschungskatamarans Halobates. Vorher schnell zum Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck (Mit n\u00fcchternem Magen aufs Schlauchboot ist keine gute Idee!) und los geht\u2019s. Auf dem Schlauchboot haben wir auf Regen gehofft, da wir S\u00fc\u00dfwasserfl\u00fcsse untersuchen wollen. Und er kam, inklusive Regenbogen. Durchn\u00e4sst, sowohl von Regen als auch Meerwasser, haben wir ausgeharrt, bis sich die Kanister mit den Wasserproben von Halobates aus dem Oberfl\u00e4chenfilm und einem Meter Tiefe f\u00fcllten und brachten sie zur\u00fcck zur Meteor. Sind die Kanister wieder an Deck, hei\u00dft es Proben verteilen, das ist manchmal ein Kampf um jeden Liter. Im Labor der Arbeitsgruppe Marine Grenzfl\u00e4chen messen wir Surfactants (Oberfl\u00e4chenaktive Substanzen) und N\u00e4hrstoffe (Nitrat, Nitrit, Phosphat, Silikat). Ist das Schlauchboot wieder an Deck, ist die \u201eHalobates-Watch\u201c an Bord des Schiffes daf\u00fcr verantwortlich, dass er nicht verloren geht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wenn keine neuen Proben reinkommen und die Messger\u00e4te laufen, wird die Zeit f\u00fcr andere Dinge genutzt. Der Bewegungsdrang wurde diesmal mit einem kurzen gemeinsamen Zirkeltraining auf dem Helikopterdeck befriedigt. Vorher gut mit Sonnencreme eincremen! Au\u00dferdem wurden sich die Laptops geschnappt und Daten an der frischen Luft auf dem Peildeck ausgewertet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Als pl\u00f6tzlich starker, kalter Wind kam, stieg kurz die Aufregung: K\u00f6nnte das ein \u201eCold Pool\u201c sein? Der Autosampler f\u00fcr die Surfactants ist durchgelaufen und musste neu angestellt werden. N\u00e4hrstoffproben mussten vergiftet und gek\u00fchlt werden. W\u00e4hrenddessen kam auch Halobates wieder an Deck. Pl\u00f6tzlich wurde das Arbeitsdeck ganz busy und es wird sich um Halobates versammelt zum Daten runterladen, ihn von Salzwasser zu befreien und Schl\u00e4uche gut durchzusp\u00fclen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zum Feierabend wurde auf dem Arbeitsdeck eine Runde Karten gespielt. Der Stationstag ist geschafft, jetzt geht es weiter zur n\u00e4chsten und wir haben einen Tag Transit vor uns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Day on Station: It&#8217;s Raining Data!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Half the journey is already behind us! We realized this, especially when celebrating the &#8220;Bergfest&#8221; on Saturday evening. The next day, work continued on the station. We\u2019re now moving steadily south, leaving the high salinity zone of the eastern subtropical Atlantic and heading towards the Intertropical Convergence Zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day began early with the deployment of our research catamaran, <em>Halobates<\/em>. First, a quick breakfast (heading out on the small boat on an empty stomach is never a good idea!) and then off we go. On the small boat, we were hoping for rain as we want to study freshwater fluxes. And rain came, along with a rainbow. Soaked from both rain and seawater, we waited until the canisters with water samples from the sea surface microlayer and a meter depth from Halobates were filled and then brought them back to <em>Meteor<\/em>. Once the canisters were back on deck, it was time to distribute the samples \u2013 sometimes it&#8217;s a fight for every liter. In the laboratory of our working group Marine interfaces, we measure surfactants (surface-active substances) and nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, silicate). The first measurement of the day with the fresh samples was taken, and after a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) measurement, it was time for lunch, which starts every day at 11:15 AM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the afternoon, it was more CTDs and a second set of canister samples from <em>Halobates<\/em>. Once the small boat is back on deck, the &#8220;Halobates Watch&#8221; on board is responsible for ensuring it doesn\u2019t get lost. When no new samples are coming in and the measuring instruments are running, time is used for other activities. This time, the urge to move was satisfied with a short group circuit training session on the helicopter deck. Don&#8217;t forget the sunscreen! Also, laptops were grabbed to analyze data in the fresh air on the radar deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suddenly, a strong, cold wind came, and excitement rose: Could this be a &#8220;Cold Pool&#8221;? The drone team sent their drones up to perform atmospheric measurements, and we were curious to see what they would find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After dinner at 5:15 PM, it was time for some more work in the lab. The auto-sampler for surfactants had finished and needed to be filled up again. Nutrient samples had to be poisoned and cooled. Meanwhile, <em>Halobates<\/em> was back on deck. Suddenly, the working deck became quite busy, and everyone gathered around <em>Halobates<\/em> to download the data, free it from saltwater, and flush the hoses properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the day, a round of cards was played on the working deck.
