Today (28.01.2017) at 17:00 NZ time our research cruise SO254 \u201ePoriBacNewZ\u201c will start from Auckland into the subtropical and subantarctic waters of the Southwest Pacific before we return to Auckland (27.02.2017)! Originally, our departure was scheduled for the 26.1., but two out of the four Diesel engines were out of service due to a damage in the chiller system delaying our departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone is-resized size-medium wp-image-619\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/icbm-auf-see.uni-oldenburg.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/WP_20170125_003-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-619\" width=\"383\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icbm-auf-see.uni-oldenburg.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/WP_20170125_003-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/icbm-auf-see.uni-oldenburg.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/WP_20170125_003-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/icbm-auf-see.uni-oldenburg.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/WP_20170125_003-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><figcaption>Research vessel SONNE in the harbour of Auckland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal of this expedition is a comprehensive investigation of the structural and functional biodiversity of bacteria communities in the water column, in the sediment and in sponges in the biogeographic provinces of the Southwest Pacific. Therefore, we will follow a transect along 180\u00b0 Longitude between 30\u00b0 to 60\u00b0 South during the upcoming 31 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fourty Scientists from four countries (Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, New Zealand) and with backgrounds in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Analytics and Sensors boarded the R\/V SONNE. Together with the ship crew we loaded and emptied containers, assigned cabins and lab space to set up workstations. Such an expeditions requires detailed planning!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the 25th January all participants had the opportunity to present their research and the vessel to an interested audience during an \u201eOpen Ship Day\u201c falling together with the 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of German-New Zealand research cooperation.
